World's biggest beach towel

Don't tell the Germans, but the world's largest towel has just been created covering a whopping 2,240 square metres of beach.

A team of 25 spent 15 days making the towel and more than 50 people were needed to roll it out on the beach near Las Palmas on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands.

More than 1,000 people registered to spend the day on the towel and Guinness World Records officials ruled it had topped the previous record set in Cyprus two years ago.

"You could leave this over every sun lounger on the whole beach and then take your pick," said one helper.

Another Guinness World Record bid was made in Sydney at the weekend when cafe owner Joe El-Ajouz created the world's biggest commerical burger.

The 15 stone burger took 24 hours to cook and was made of 81kg of mince, 120 eggs, 16 tomatoes, 120 cheese slices, 2kg of lettuce, 21kg of bread and half a kilo of barbecue sauce.

  • Models pose amongst piles of rubbish

A top fashion photographer has launched a project to illustrate the environmental damage caused by the collapse of Sicily's refuse industry.

Matilde Incorpora has shot top fashion models amongst the growing piles of rubbish in the capital Palermo.

Rubbish collection - which is firmly in the grip of the Mafia - has left trash to rot in the streets of the Cosa Nostra heartland.

Now Incorpora and other fashion leaders have decided to ignore the risks of speaking out, highlighting the problem with a series of snaps of models among the discarded rubbish.

"They look like the world's best dressed down-and-outs but they have a serious point to make," said one fan.

Incoropora explained: "We arranged the photographic set in the streets of Palermo as a form of protest against the environmental damage of this wonderful city with its thousand-year-old history."

The good looks of the models have been posed against some of the city's worst eyesores, looking like a grungy artistic fashion shoot.

Until, that is, the viewer realises that this is no studio set, but instead a real problem afflicting the citizens of Palermo.

Local firefighters have been kept busy as they are called out to extinguish piles of burning rubbish, and there are fears of a health crisis as rotting food and other waste builds up in the streets.

"I hope my photography can help open people's eyes and do something to end this crisis," added Incorpora.

  • Russian Giant And His Tiny Wife

Here’s a guy you don’t ever want to pick a fight with: Nikolay "Russian Giant" Valuev, who, at 7 feet tall, absolutely towers over his opponents (before pummelling them to oblivion).

Nikolay also happens to be the heaviest and tallest heavyweight boxing champion in history.

His British challenger has a mountain to climb, but in fact the Russian giant is a sensitive soul who wooed his wife with love poems and likes a bit of Miss Marple. His wife is tiny [5ft 2in] and they have two small children.

  • Jobless man builds 'extreme' igloo

An unemployed Ohio man from has built himself an 'extreme igloo' in his yard - complete with cable TV and surround sound.

Jimmy Grey, 25, of Aquilla, near Cleveland, said he'd needed a project to keep himself busy, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

His four-room igloo has 6ft ceilings and an entertainment room. He powers the TV with an extension cord plugged into an outlet in the garage.

He also installed cable television with surround-sound stereo, enabling him and his friends to watch the Superbowl in his icy mansion.

Mr Grey said candles help to add ambiance for night time get-togethers, and the freezing temperatures mean the beer is always chilled.

He got the basic construction materials by clearing the drive of his family and his neighbours after a snowstorm in January.

Mr Grey says that he's enjoyed pouring his energy into the project after nearly a year of unemployment.

"If anybody needs a hand and wants to hire a hard worker, I'm the guy you're looking for," he said.
