  • Nepal's shortest man seeks world record

Khagendra Thapa Magar, 18, who stands at 22 inches (56 centimeters) tall, is carried by his father Rup Bahadur Thapa Magar, as he arrives for a meeting with media before leaving for Europe in Katmandu, Nepal, Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010. Magar's family initially filed a claim for the title of the world's shortest man when he was just 14 years old but it was rejected since he was not an adult and there was a chance he might grow, said Min Bahadur Ranamagar, of the Khagendra Thapa Magar Foundation. Magar turned 18 in October 2009.

  • Russian Giant And His Tiny Wife

Here’s a guy you don’t ever want to pick a fight with: Nikolay "Russian Giant" Valuev, who, at 7 feet tall, absolutely towers over his opponents (before pummelling them to oblivion).

Nikolay also happens to be the heaviest and tallest heavyweight boxing champion in history.

His British challenger has a mountain to climb, but in fact the Russian giant is a sensitive soul who wooed his wife with love poems and likes a bit of Miss Marple. His wife is tiny [5ft 2in] and they have two small children.

  • Zebra runs amok in rush hour traffic

Police chased a runaway zebra though rush hour traffic in Atlanta, Georgia, after it escaped from a circus.

Several police cars and motorcycles pursued the scared animal for several miles before it was eventually captured.

The animal, named Lima, which was spotted all over town, had escaped from an outdoor enclosure of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Motorists and pedestrians where treated to unusual scenes, the local Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

"It was wild," Prapik Jani, a restaurant manager, said. "I thought I was seeing things."

"All of a sudden, a freaking zebra comes running down the street like a car," another witness was quoted as saying.

"Five or six police cars were in hot pursuit. And a bunch of officers on foot. But then I got scared, thinking... what else is loose?"

  • Man angry at IRS crashes plane into building!!!

AUSTIN, Texas – A software engineer furious with the Internal Revenue Service launched a suicide attack on the agency Thursday by crashing his small plane into an office building containing nearly 200 IRS employees, setting off a raging fire that sent workers running for their lives.

At least one person in the building was missing.

    Joseph A. Stack

The FBI tentatively identified the pilot as Joseph A. Stack, 53. Law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still going on, said that before taking off, Stack apparently set fire to his house and posted a long anti-government screed on the Web. It was dated Thursday and signed "Joe Stack (1956-2010)."

In it, the author cited run-ins he had with the IRS and ranted about the tax agency, government bailouts and corporate America's "thugs and plunderers."

"I have had all I can stand," he wrote, adding: "I choose not to keep looking over my shoulder at `big brother' while he strips my carcass."

The pilot took off in a single-engine Piper Cherokee from an airport in Georgetown, about 30 miles from Austin, without filing a flight plan. He flew low over the Austin skyline before plowing into the side of the hulking, seven-story, black-glass building just before 10 a.m. with a thunderous explosion that instantly stirred memories of Sept. 11.

Flames shot from the building, windows exploded, a huge pillar of black smoke rose over the city, and terrified workers rushed to get out.

The Pentagon scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from Houston to patrol the skies over the burning building before it became clear that it was the act of a lone pilot, and President Barack Obama was briefed.

"It felt like a bomb blew off," said Peggy Walker, an IRS revenue officer who was sitting at her desk. "The ceiling caved in and windows blew in. We got up and ran."

Stack was presumed dead, though police said they had not recovered his body as of Thursday evening. At least 13 people were injured, with two reported in critical condition. About 190 IRS employees work in the building.

Gerry Cullen was eating breakfast at a restaurant across the street when the plane struck the building and "vanished in a fireball."

Matt Farney, who was in the parking lot of a nearby Home Depot, said he saw a low-flying plane near some apartments just before it crashed. "I figured he was going to buzz the apartments or he was showing off," Farney said. "It was insane. It didn't look like he was out of control or anything."

Sitting at her desk in another building a half-mile from the crash, Michelle Santibanez felt the vibrations and ran to the windows, where she and her co-workers witnessed a scene that reminded them of 9/11.

"It was the same kind of scenario, with window panels falling out and desks falling out and paperwork flying," said Santibanez, an accountant.

The building, in a heavily congested section of Austin, was still smoldering six hours later, with the worst of the damage on the second and third floors.

The entire outside of the second floor was gone on the side of the building where the plane hit. Support beams were bent inward. Venetian blinds dangled from blown-out windows, and large sections of the exterior were blackened with soot. It was not immediately clear if any tax records were destroyed.

Andrew Jacobson, an IRS revenue officer who was on the second floor when the plane hit with a "big whoomp" and then a second explosion, said about six people couldn't use the stairwell because of smoke and debris. He found a metal bar to break a window so the group could crawl out onto a concrete ledge, where they were rescued by firefighters. His bloody hands were bandaged.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said "heroic actions" by federal employees may explain why the death toll was so low.

The FBI was investigating. The National Transportation Safety Board sent an investigator as well.

Rep. Michael McCaul, a Republican from Austin on the Homeland Security Committee, said the panel will take up the issue of how to better protect buildings from attacks with planes.

In the long, rambling, self-described "rant" that Stack apparently posted on the Internet, he began: "If you're reading this, you're no doubt asking yourself, `Why did this have to happen?'"

He recounted his financial reverses, his difficulty finding work in Austin, and at least two clashes with the IRS, one of them after he filed no return because, he said, he had no income, the other after he failed to report his wife Sheryl's income.

He railed against politicians, the Catholic Church, the "unthinkable atrocities" committed by big business, and the government bailouts that followed. He said he slowly came to the conclusion that "violence not only is the answer, it is the only answer."

"I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different. I am finally ready to stop this insanity. Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let's try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well," he wrote.

According to California state records, Stack had a troubled business history, twice starting software companies in California that ultimately were suspended by the state's tax board, one in 2000, the other in 2004. Also, his first wife filed for bankruptcy in 1999, listing a debt to the IRS of nearly $126,000.

The blaze at Stack's home, a red-brick house on a tree-lined street in a middle-class neighborhood six miles from the crash site, caved in the roof and blew out the windows.

Elbert Hutchins, who lives one house away, said the house caught fire about 9:15 a.m. He said a woman and her teenage daughter drove up to the house before firefighters arrived.

"They both were very, very distraught," said Hutchins, a retiree who said he didn't know the family well. "'That's our house!' they cried. `That's our house!'"

Red Cross spokeswoman Marty McKellips said the agency was treating two people who live in the house.

A baby squirrel has been adopted by a cat - and become best friends with her kitten.

The unlikely pals cuddle up together with 'mum' Tita in Envigado, near Medellin, Colombia, reports The Sun.

The two baby animals suckle on Tita's milk, scamper about the house and even share a cuddle from time to time.

The squirrel was rescued by Ruben Gaviria who found him injured in a local park.

He has been nursing the little rodent back to health with the help of his feline companions.

  • Bull turns tables on tiger

A Chinese zoo's bid to restore a tiger's natural instincts by putting a live bull in its cage backfired when prey turned hunter.

Yancheng Zoo, in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, put the one-year-old bull into the white tiger's enclosure, reports Modern Express.

Keepers expected the rare tiger, called Tang Bai Hu, would kill and eat the animal as it would have done in the wild.

Tang Bai Hu did try to attack the bull - but the bull turned the tables by charging the tiger which fled in terror, much to the amusement of visitors.

The tiger tried again but could not get the better of the bull which pushed him away and, at one stage, even seemed to bite the tiger back.

Zoo spokesman Chang Yihai admitted that a live bull might have been too much for the 15-year-old tiger which normally eats chopped beef or chicken.

"Our tigers' hunting skills are long forgotten. They live a very comfortable life here, with a big house, swimming pool and sports field," he said.

"But their wild nature has been lost, which indirectly causes the degeneration of their immune system and reproductive ability."

The zoo had not given up - but would try offering Tang Bai Hu live chickens next time and build up from there, he added.

Tang Bai Hu is the zoo's only adult white tiger. He and his two cubs, Charles and Harry, are the stars of the zoo's big cat show.

  • Russian mugging victim Julia Popova has knife plunged into back & doesn't feel it

THIS mugging victim had a six inch knife plunged deep into her back — and she didn't even feel it.

The shocking picture shows the blade sticking out just above Julia Popova's shoulders and blood pouring from the wound.

Incredibly the 22-year-old, who was knifed by a mugger on her way home from work, failed to notice the appalling injury and managed to calmly stroll to safety.

The office worker had grappled with her attacker when he snatched her handbag as she walked to her parents' house in the Russian capital Moscow.

But she was so shocked by the ordeal she didn't know that the thug had buried a kitchen knife in her neck just fractions of an inch from her spinal cord.

When she got home her horrified parents rushed her to hospital where surgeons managed to remove the blade without damaging Julia's spine.

One medic said: "Shock had kicked in and her body prevented her from feeling any pain. She simply walked home without feeling the knife in her back."

  • Locked in with 48 tigers

A Chinese safari park has recruited three people to live with 48 tigers for 72 hours.

They have been given a 10 sq metre cage within the enclosure and will record every aspect of the tigers' lives for three days.

Qu Hongtao, spokesman of Qinling Wild Animal Safari in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, said: "We want to celebrate the Year of the Tiger and also raise awareness of the need to protect wildlife."

Mr Qu said he had been amazed to receive a total of 667 applications from "brave people" wanting to live in the tiger enclosure.

"As we only need three people, the success rate is lower than 0.5% making the tiger enclosure harder to get into than the top university in China," he added.

The zoo finally picked three students, Li Hang, Gan Xiaotian, Meng Zihui, for the programme, reports China News Network.

They have been provided with cameras, laptop computers and notebooks to record the activities of the 48 tigers around the clock.

They have been told to record their fights for territory and for mates, and their eating and living habits.

Meng Zihui, a master's degree student from Peking University and the only female participant, said: "Tigers can't speak and vote. We must think for them."

  • Ordeal of human ice cube

A magician is in hospital suffering from severe frostbite after spending more than 64 hours as a human ice cube to break a world endurance record.

Latvian illusionist Gennady Palychevsky, 40, spent 64 hours and 32 minutes in the six foot square ice cube in Moscow before signaling for help.

The event tops American magician David Blaine's 63 hours in ice in New York's Times Square 10 years ago.

Palychevsky - known as Mr Fix - in magic circles - staggered from the ice after his frozen ordeal and was rushed away by paramedics.

His horrified wife Jelena said: "The last night was the most difficult. Each hour we thought would be the last in the ice and at five in the morning we began panicking.

"He wasn't in good shape when he left the ice, he was very bad, but he's much better now."

Medics say Palychevsky was on the verge of literally freezing to death before he called a halt to the stunt.

Palychevsky - who trained in ice baths for six months - didn't eat or drink while he was sealed inside his ice tomb, broadcast live on Latvian radio throughout the entire stunt.

Timed videos of the event have been sent to Guinness World Records and will be made into a TV documentary later this year.

Palychevsky's officials say he spent 32 minutes longer in the ice than the previous record holder, Israeli illusionist Hezi Dayan who beat David Blaine's record just one month ago.

  • Jobless man builds 'extreme' igloo

An unemployed Ohio man from has built himself an 'extreme igloo' in his yard - complete with cable TV and surround sound.

Jimmy Grey, 25, of Aquilla, near Cleveland, said he'd needed a project to keep himself busy, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

His four-room igloo has 6ft ceilings and an entertainment room. He powers the TV with an extension cord plugged into an outlet in the garage.

He also installed cable television with surround-sound stereo, enabling him and his friends to watch the Superbowl in his icy mansion.

Mr Grey said candles help to add ambiance for night time get-togethers, and the freezing temperatures mean the beer is always chilled.

He got the basic construction materials by clearing the drive of his family and his neighbours after a snowstorm in January.

Mr Grey says that he's enjoyed pouring his energy into the project after nearly a year of unemployment.

"If anybody needs a hand and wants to hire a hard worker, I'm the guy you're looking for," he said.

  • TV chef suspended over cat recipe

A top Italian food writer has been suspended from the country's version of Ready Steady Cook for recommending stewed cat.

Beppe Bigazzi, 77, has been dropped indefinitely by broadcaster RAI after he offered the "succulent" recipe on La Prova del Cuoco.

Its switchboard was inundated with complaints from viewers and animal rights groups, reports The Times.

Bigazzi said that casserole of cat was a famous dish in his home region of Valdarno, Tuscany.

"I've eaten it myself and it's a lot better than many other animals," he told viewers. "Better than chicken, rabbit or pigeon."

He said that for optimum flavour the meat should be "soaked in spring water for three days" before being stewed.

Francesca Martini, Italy's deputy health minister, said it was "absolutely unheard of for a public service broadcaster to tell people how delicious cats are to eat".

She called for the producers to be investigated for criminal offences involving incitement to mistreat animals.

Mr Bigazzi later insisted he had only been joking about the recipe, and he had been misunderstood.

But he added: "Mind you, I wasn't joking all that much. In the 1930s and 1940s, when I was a boy, people certainly did eat cat in the countryside around Arezzo."

  • Moscow porn hacker seized

Police in Russia have arrested a hacker who caused gridlock by beaming a porn film on a giant billboard in central Moscow.

An unemployed 40-year-old man from the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk has been detained for the offence, reports Kommersant daily.

A special division of the Interior Ministry responsible for investigating IT crimes made the arrest, the newspaper reported.

The 30ft by 20ft screen switched from screening ads to hardcore porn for 20 minutes on January 14, instantly bringing the city centre to a standstill.

Drivers recorded the incident on their mobile phones and later uploaded it to YouTube where it became a massive hit.

The man, whose name was not disclosed, reportedly admitted the crime but said he thought it would be shown on a screen in a shop in Moscow to a much smaller audience and would "entertain people".

The man said he had hacked into a server of an organisation in Chechnya and changed the video in the playlist of the advertising agency from there.

He man now faces up to two years in prison for unlawful access to computer information and unlawful distribution of pornography.

  • Old Nintendo system sells for $13,105

Everyday folk discovering colossally valuable collectors' items amid everyday junk has been the lifeblood of antiques shows for years, but it's not every day you see a real-life gold-in-the-attic tale play out on eBay.

Last week, North Carolina eBay user lace_thongs35 thought she was putting up an everyday, 80s-era Nintendo Entertainment System (together with five games) up on the popular auction site. But less than an hour after the first bid, the price was over $6,000 -- and on Wednesday, when the auction closed, the final selling price topped $13,000.

Why? Not the console itself, but one of the games bundled with it -- a deeply obscure 1987 release called Stadium Events, a highly sought-after collectors' item. But it wasn't even the game itself that was worth the bulk of the money -- it was the original cardboard box, which collectors value at a breathtaking $10,000. Fewer than 10 complete copies of the game are thought to exist, and retro gaming aficionados consider it one of the hardest-to-find NES games ever made.

Bet you're wishing you hadn't let Mom throw out your Nintendo collection now, eh?
