Robots wait tables at new restaurant

A new restaurant where all of the waitresses are robots has opened in China.

The Dalu Rebot Restaurant, in Jinan, northern China's Shandong Province, has six robot waitresses and can cater for up to 100 diners.

The 21 tables are set in circles and the robots follow a fixed route to serve diners in rotation.

After serving, the robots return to the kitchen to refill their cart for the next round.

Restaurant spokeswoman Wang Xianwei said that all of the waiting on tables was done by robots.

However, the food, mainly the Chinese version of fondue, was prepared by humans in the kitchen.

And people were also employed to welcome customers and explain to them how the restaurant worked.

The restaurant was developed by the Shandong Dalu Science and Technology Company which plans to further develop the concept.

Spokesman Zhang Yongpei said: "Next, we'll develop robots which can climb stairs and help with kitchen chores like washing the dishes.

"And our waitresses will become more sophisticated so they can go direct to a customer's table and even refill diners' drinks."

Stradivarius snatched from sandwich shop

A world-famous violinist had her £1.2m Stradivarius violin stolen when she stopped to buy a £2.95 sandwich for her lunch.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Min-Jin Kym was on her way to catch a train when opportunistic thieves struck, reports the Daily Telegraph.

They stole her 314-year-old Stradivarius violin along with a Peccatte bow worth £62,000 as she bought a sandwich at London's Euston station.

Miss Kym, 32, had put her prized instrument - one of only 450 in the world - down as she chose her lunch at a branch of Pret A Manger.

Pret worker Hafid Salah told of Miss Kym's panic when she realised her violin had vanished.

He said: "She and her friend were on computers and iPhones and not looking at their bags.

"She came up to me at the counter and said: "Have you seen my bag? Call the police. Can you get the CCTV? You have to do something". She was really upset and panicking."

Det Insp Andy Rose said: "These items hold enormous sentimental and professional value for the victim but although they are extremely valuable, it would be very difficult to sell them on as they are so rare and distinctive."

South Korean-born Miss Kym has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and released Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major on the Sony label.

Insurers have offered a £15,000 reward for information leading to recovery of the violin and bows. It was on long-term loan to Miss Kym and it is not known who owns it.

Woman adopts 1,500 stray dogs

A Chinese woman has given up her job, her home and her car to adopt more than 1,500 stray dogs.

Ha Wenjin gave up her business career and sold her house, car and jewellery to set up her unofficial dog rescue centre in Tangquan County, Nanjing.

"At first I did this in my spare time, but as I gathered more and more abandoned pets, I had to work full time for them," she said.

She has taken on 10 workers to help her look after the dogs - and another two to help care for 200 adopted cats at a second centre she has set up nearby.

But her project was put at risk when local government officials, who don't recognise her work, reclaimed the land for redevelopment.

"I had to find a new place which was deserted and not close to any human habitat, as 1,500 dogs are not quiet," she said.

"And the place had to be very cheap to rent, as most of our income comes from donations."

Finances are so tight that she partly relies on volunteer days when people bring hundreds of 'pork buns' to feed the dogs.

Ha eventually found a site, in Houyu village, Pukou County, but desperately needs funds to get the new animal rescue centre up and running.

And she is hoping more volunteers will turn out help her move the dogs on four buses on 4 December - and to clean the vehicles afterwards.

Duck has three legs - and four feet

A farmer in China has spoken of his surprise after one of his ducks turned out to have three legs and four feet.

Yang Fuyong, of Linchuan County, Guilin, southern China's Guangxi Province, said the duck was one of a batch of 600 he had bought as ducklings.

While vaccinating them, he noticed one of them had one too many legs - and two too many feet.

He has since sold the ducks but kept the unusual one for a pet.

"I have been raising ducks for more than 10 years but I have never seen anything like this before," he said.

"It has an extra leg behind the other two and that leg has two feet. I'm going to carry on raising it to see how it does."

An official at the local livestock husbandry station said the duck was almost certainly the result of a genetic mutation.

'Pretty' officers hand out roses

Attractive women police officers are handing out roses to drivers guilty of minor motoring offences to remind them to abide by the laws of the road.

Police in Dazhou city, on south-west China's Sichuan province, came up with the idea of asking "beautiful officers" to ask motorists to drive safely.

Female officers aged between 25 and 45 have been selected to take part in the campaign.

"The idea is to let drivers feel more eased and relaxed so they take our message on board," said a spokesman.

"We think drivers might respond better to roses from a pretty girl than to a speeding ticket."

The campaign, organised by the local public security office and the women's association, aims to hand out 100,000 roses and 100,000 pendants before the end of December.

Man forced to eat his own beard

A Kentucky man has told how two 'friends' cut off his beard and forced him to eat it in a fight over a lawnmower.

Harvey Westmoreland told police the pair, James Hill and Troy Holt, had invited him and his brother to their house.

"They called and wanted me to come around there and when I got there, I realised they were already drunk," he told WLEX-TV.

In the course of their exchange, Holt apparently offered to buy Mr Westmoreland's lawnmower for $250.

"I paid twenty bucks for it. He thought I was trying to cheat him," added Mr Westmoreland.

"One thing led to another and, before I knowed it, there were knives and guns and everything just went haywire.

"They cut my beard and forced me to eat it."

A news report of the incident by local station Lex 18 News has been posted on YouTube where it has attracted nearly 300,000 hits.

The two men pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident and are due to be sentenced next week.

MOSCOW – Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has invited Russians to help him come up with a name for his new puppy, which he received as a gift from his Bulgarian counterpart over the weekend.

"Anyone who wishes to can send their suggestion of a male name for the prime minister's new dog to his site," a government statement said on its official website www.premier.gov.ru .

After Moscow and Sofia signed a series of accords to boost the South Stream gas pipeline, Putin was all smiles when Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov presented the Karakachan dog to the 58-year-old leader.

Putin, who has a black belt in judo and has cultivated a macho image, snuggled the fluffy, floppy-eared puppy of three months before gently planting a kiss on his snout.

The puppy will have to share the canine spotlight with Putin's beloved black Labrador Connie, who is 11.

Putin once boasted that Connie was bigger than former U.S. President George W. Bush's Scottish terrier Barney, according to Bush's memoir "Decision Points," published earlier this month.

"Of course, it is very important that they build their relationship," the government statement said of the dogs.

Australia to restrict internet tobacco advertising

SYDNEY – Australia will move on Wednesday to restrict internet tobacco advertising, preventing retailers from promoting cheap or tax free cigarettes, as part of a campaign to cut smoking rates by 10 percent by 2018.

Young Australians, aged 24-29, currently have the highest rate of smoking among Australians, who currently have a nearly 20 percent rate of smoking overall.

Australia has some of the world's toughest tobacco advertising restrictions and already bans advertising on television and radio, in newspapers and magazines, and at sporting events.

Retailers are prohibited from displaying cigarette packets in shops and cigarette packets carry graphic images of cancer and a health warning that smoking causes cancer.

"Prohibiting retailers from peddling cigarettes as 'cheap' or 'tax-free' on the internet is the latest step in the...government's hard hitting and comprehensive action to reduce Australia's smoking rates," Health Minister Nicola Roxon said in announcing the new legislation to go to parliament.

"Together with our efforts to mandate the plain packaging of tobacco products from 2012, Australia is on track to have the world's toughest measures against tobacco," Roxon added.

"Tobacco use is Australia's single largest cause of premature death and disease, killing 15,000 Australians a year and costing our economy A$31.5 billion."

Smoking rates in Australia have been declining since the mid-1970s when the advertising bans first started, down from around 35 percent to 19 percent today.

The Australian Council on Smoking and Health welcomed the move.

"Cigarettes are now being heavily promoted on the Internet, and there are serious concerns that both online advertising and social networking sites are being used to promote tobacco to young people," said council president Mike Daube.

Igni Agnarsson, from the University of Puerto Rico, first discovered Darwin’s Bark Spider and their giant webs, back in 2001, and knew he had to return to Madagascar and study these little creatures further. He did just that in 2008 and 2010, and his research revealed some pretty incredible data.


While it isn’t exactly the largest spider known to man (the female is larger than the male, and it only measures 3-4 cm, with its legs outstretched), Darwin’s Bark Spider spawns giant webs that reach up to 25 meters in length, with a main core of around 2.8 square meters. With webs this size, it’s now wonder the silky substance can withstand twice as much force as a normal spider’s, which makes it 10 times stronger than a similar piece of Kevlar, and thus, the strongest biological material ever found.


How, and why Darwin’s Bark Spider creates these giant webs is still a secret, but the fact that they are usually found across rivers and lakes suggests they mean to capture big insects that spent their young lives in a water environment, trapping them right when they take to the air. Birds and bats also pass right above the water, but there’s yet no evidence the spider web could trap such large prey.

Zara Hatshorn Suffers a lipodystrophy | 13 Years Old but Like a 60 Years Old

Zara is the strongest sufferer in her family. Three out of Tracey’s seven children suffers from Lipodsytrophy.

When asked what she feels when she sees her own face in the mirror, Zara said, “I don’t like it. Sometimes I’ll sit in my room and start pulling my skin back, stuff like that. Most teenagers worry about getting spots…. I’m worried about surgery and stuff like that and when’s bullying going to stop.”


Zara Hartshorn is a 13 year old girl but unfortunately she looks older than her friends’ parents as she suffers from a disease called lipodystrophy. It is a genetic disorder which makes the supporting fatty tissue under the skin to crumble while the skin continues to grow. Such a condition is extremely rare and is diagnosed in only 2,000 people around the entire world. This disease is related with insulin resistance, a high triglyceride level, diabetes and fatty liver. Every member of Zara’s family suffers from this disease but her symptoms are more serious than her older siblings. The appearance of a 50 year old woman is creating destructive effects on Zara’s social life.

Zara’s mother Tracey was also born with Lipodystrophy and she knows what Zara is going through. She could tell Zara suffered from the disease when she was just a newborn:
“I was grieving for a child that’s got to go through the same things in life that I’ve had to go through,” she said. “I was angry at myself for actually having Zara.”

“It feels like people are looking down their noses at me and staring,” she said at her home in northern England. “You know when you get that feeling you’re being watched? I feel that everywhere I go.”

Yvonne has already been labeled as the most allergic woman in Britain, due to the many things that cause her allergic reactions. Among the things her body can’t stand are deodorant, perfume, paint, fizzy drinks, minerals in bottled spring water, chocolate, onions, car fumes, hydrocortisone cream, nuts, bleach, fish, tea, coffee, oranges, tomatoes, latex, talc, newsprint dye, coins, banknotes, pasta, sunflower oil, dairy products, wheat, bread products, white rice, porridge, white sugar, sweets, cigarette smoke, nickel, gold, silver, food colourings, sulphates, calcium chloride and rainwater. And these aren’t even the worst ones…

Like most women, Yvonne loves to shop, but in the last few months she had to cope with excruciating pains, every time she bought anything. It was like her body was punishing her for spending money, and in a way, it was. After extensive tests, doctors found out Yvonne’s body is also allergic to the dye in bills, and also metal coins. And, if that wasn’t bad enough, she is also allergic to latex, so she can’t wear rubber gloves to handle money. Really poor woman.. well i wonder how can she survive her life with so many allergic that she has.

Now, Britain’s most allergic woman lives on a very basic diet, made up of filtered water, lentils, brown rice, carrots and apples. She hates being like this, and wishes there was something she could do about her condition, but right now it’s incurable, and because such a wide spectrum allergy is so rare, chances for an antidote are rather slim.

But, I suppose things could be worse, she could be allergic to something even more common like rain, right? Well, unfortunately, Yvonne Simon really is allergic to rain, and has to wear an umbrella, each time she goes outdoors.

World’s Longest Snake in Captivity 2011 Guinness Records

A reticulated python called Fluffy from Columbus Zoo in Powell, Ohio, USA who measures over 24 feet (7.3 m) and weighs 220lb has been recognised as the Longest Snake in Captivity after a year of research from the global record keepers.

The length of the snake is the same as two cars, a caravan or a limousine, and it took a total of nine brave zoo members to lift the record-breaking snake for her picture in the new book. Fluffy arrived at the Zoo in 2007 and since then has been visited by between 50,000 and 70,000 visitors a week.

Carey Pratt, Assistant Curator at the Zoo says: “Fluffy is a fairly calm and laidback snake. She enjoys her life of solitude”. When asked about Fluffy’s diet, Pratt said “Let’s just say that Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse wouldn’t make good friends for her”.

A US student is said to be distraught after a PowerPoint presentation detailing her sexual conquests went viral.

Karen Owen, a 22-year-old student of Duke University, North Carolina, detailed her exploits with 13 men, reports the Daily Telegraph.

She produced the unofficial 'senior honours thesis' on her flings as a joke to be shared with three close friends after she graduated in May.

But it was subsequently leaked to the university's 14,000 student population before becoming a global viral hit.

The 42 page presentation is titled 'An education beyond the classroom: excelling in the realm of horizontal academics'.

Miss Owen, from Connecticut, graphically describes her lovers, how they met in bars and what they did after their binge drinking sessions.

Each of her 13 lovers is named and pictured. She details their 'pros' and 'cons' and ranks their sexual prowess out of 10 in coloured charts.

A University spokesman said officials were "reaching out to those who've been affected by this incident".

Mum shocked to find baby girl is a boy

A County Durham couple have spoken of their shock after being told that their baby girl is actually a baby boy.

Five weeks after giving birth to a girl, mum Claire Robson was astonished when doctors told her 'she' was a 'he' after all.

Ms Robson, 21, and partner, Andrew O'Shaughnessy, 27, from Brandon, near Durham, were thrilled when their first baby was born at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Born 11 weeks prematurely by caesarian section, the baby was immediately transferred to an incubator, reports the Northern Echo.

Ms Robson was told she had had a little girl who the couple named Olivia and started stocking up on pink baby cloths.

It was during a visit to the Wearside hospital that the couple were called in by a consultant and told that Olivia was, in fact, a boy.

Ms Robson said: "I just burst into tears. It's taken a bit of getting used to. From that point onwards everyone kept calling the baby a he.

"Because he was born so early he wasn't fully developed - that's why no one could tell. As he got a few weeks older it became apparent."

The couple have quickly adjusted to having a son rather than a daughter and now Olivia has a new name, Dylan.

"I love Dylan just as much. He's the same baby," said Ms Robson, who is now wondering what to do with a room filled with 'baby girl' cards sent by wellwishers.

Groom hires diggers to save cash

A Chinese groom who works for a heavy machinery company used a fleet of mechanical diggers instead of wedding cars to save money.

Zhang Zongqiang, 35, admits it took some persuading before his bride, Ye Yuzi, 26, agreed to his plan, reports the Dahe Daily.

But he says his idea was a big success with scores of people coming out to watch the happy couple pass by - in the bucket of the lead digger.

All six diggers were decorated with ribbons and balloons for the wedding in Pingdingshan, central China's Henan Province.

Zhang said: "Our company sells excavators, so I was able to save quite a lot on renting the wedding cars - but I never expected it to attract so much attention.

"The main idea was to save some money on the cost of the wedding but it turned out to be very special in the end."

Ye said she was completely against the idea at first but Zhang won her around by convincing her how memorable their wedding would be.

"Standing in the front bucket of an excavator was freezing, but it was all worth it. I was so excited I had to hold his hand tight so I didn't slip out of the bucket," she said.

The couple handed out wedding sweets to policemen along the route to help make up for the extra traffic congestion.

The world's widest mouth! (Pic and Video)

An Angolan man has been recognised as having the world's widest mouth by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Francisco Domingo Joaquim, 20 - aka the Angolan Jaw of Awe - can fit a 330ml can of pop into his mouth - sideways.

He can stretch his mouth more than six-and-a-half inches wide, and recently put his skills to the test at the the Big Mouth competition in Rome.

Contestants crammed their mouths with a whole host of items including saucers, coffee cups and beer bottles but nobody could beat Francisco and his can of coke.

He shot to stardom performing his jaw-dropping talent on the streets of Luanda, capital of Angola.

Francisco, known as Chiquinho, and his unique talent was discovered by Guinness Book of World Record researchers scouring YouTube.

After two years of searching, they tracked him down to his hometown in Angola.

Since then Francisco has become an internet sensation with his videos racking up thousands of hits.

After finding out that he would feature in the Book of Guinness World Records 2011, Chiquinho said that it was "a dream come true".

Dog prefers to walk on two legs

A pet dog has become a local celebrity in China because he prefers to walk upright on his back legs.

Zhou Guanshun, the 18-month-old dog's owner, of Zhumadian, Henan Province, taught his pet to walk on two legs by holding one of its front paws.

"Lu Lu was given to us by a friend and we loved him instantly," he said.

"He learnt to walk upright when he was just four months old, and hasn't stopped ever since then."

Zhou, a retired teacher, said that Lu Lu now spends most of his time standing upright on his back legs.

Even when he rests, he prefers to squat on his back legs while keeping his body upright and his front legs off the ground.

Each morning, Zhou takes Lu Lu to the nearby Century Square for a walk, where Lu Lu is a celebrity among the morning exercisers who all love him and bring him snacks.

Spiderlings to descend on Suffolk broads

The 1,600 spiderlings were released at Castle Marshes on Wednesday

More than 1,000 young spiders from a hybrid species have been released into the Suffolk broads.

The Dolomedes plantarius spiderlings were released into suitable dykes at Castle Marshes between Lowestoft and Beccles on Wednesday.

About 4mm, they are hybrids between species found in Sussex and Suffolk.

The 1,600 spiderlings were hand-reared in the kitchen of project leader Dr Helen Smith, with the surplus reared at the John Innes Centre in Norwich.

Dr Smith said: "The hybrids bring the advantage of increased genetic variability to the new population.

"This... should give the new population at Castle Marshes the best potential to adapt to its surroundings and to cope with the impacts of climate change."

The project was organised by Natural England and Suffolk Wildlife Trust and was aided by a grant from the BBC Wildlife Fund.

Thief keeps laptop, returns contents

A thief who stole the laptop of a university professor later returned the contents on a USB memory stick.

The professor, who teaches at Umea University in Sweden, was devastated when ten years of work stored on his laptop was stolen.

But a week after the theft, the entire contents of his laptop were posted to him on a USB stick, reports the Daily Telegraph.

"I am very happy. This story makes me feel hope for humanity," the unnamed professor told local Västerbottens-Kuriren newspaper.

The professor left his bag, containing the laptop, hidden behind a door in his apartment stairwell while he went into the building's laundry room.

When he emerged a short time later, the bag had gone. It was returned shortly after, without the laptop.

"The backpack was there again. With all the papers, calendar and credit cards. It was just the computer that was missing," he said.

However, a week after the theft, the professor received a USB stick containing all the documents - which would have taken several hours to download.

"It is my life. I have documented everything in it that has happened in the last 10 years and beyond," he said.

"Often when people lose their computers and cameras, it is understandably not the gadget itself that is the most important. The content is often irreplaceable."

A US cat has broken the Guinness world record for the world's longest domestic cat.

Stewie, a five-year-old Maine Coon cat, was certified as the new record holder after measuring 48.5 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail.

His owners, Robin Hendrickson and Erik Brandsness of Reno, Nevada, said they decided to try for the record after hearing people say they were amazed by Stewie's length.

"We realized that Stewie was exceptionally long about three years ago," Mr Hendrickson told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "Everyone says, 'Wow what a long cat!' "

Stewie was certified by Guinness World Records as the world's longest domestic cat. The record was previously held by another cat that measured 48 inches.

Dancing goat fights off stray dogs

A Chinese man says he has trained his pet goat to perform tricks and to act as a guard dog at his home.

Zhao Huaiyun says the 20-month-old goat will fight off stray dogs to protect his home in Mianzhu, southwest China's Sichuan Province.

And he claims the animal even makes sure he answers his telephone whenever he leaves it around the house and doesn't hear it ring.

"It's really smart," he told the West China City Daily. "It loves to dance with me and it can shake hands with visitors.

"And whenever it hears my mobile phone ring, it runs up to me, puts its forelegs on my arms, and baas nonstop until I answer it.

"Sometimes neighbours' dogs run to my home to try and steal food, and then my goat tries to drive them away. If he can't win the fight, he runs back into the house, calling me for help."

Mum's bid to be world's fattest

A US mother of two is waging a campaign to become the world's heaviest living woman.

Donna Simpson, 42, from New Jersey, weighs more than 42 stone and aims to reach 71 stone - or 1,000lbs, reports the Daily Telegraph.

She has her own website which gives fans the chance to pay to watch her eat greasy food or walk to the car.

"The bigger your butt is, the bigger belly you have, the sexier you are," she said.

Miss Simpson spends as much as £516 a week on groceries, suffers from diabetes and struggles with basic tasks such as cooking and taking a shower.

But she dismisses critics who warn that her weight can lead to health problems: "I'm very healthy. I go to the doctor every three months," she said.

Miss Simpson has found a man who says he appreciates her size, and they plan to marry in Hawaii this year.

Her fiance, Philippe Gouamba, 49, the father of her three-year-old daughter, says he finds her attractive and is one of her biggest supporters.

"You look at her curves and see her full belly and generous hips," he said. "It's very sexy."

A Guinness World Records spokesman said Miss Simpson has submitted a claim for the title of world's heaviest woman to give birth, a claim that is being reviewed.
